As Spirit Week at Springfield High School comes to an end, we find ourselves still laughing at all the outrageous bikers, surfers and Barbies in our school. Homecoming is more than just a distraction from class, it is also a historical tradition amongst students. According to an article by “Educational Foundations,” the universal tradition of Homecoming began around 1910 to boost school spirit at college football games. A Homecoming dance typically takes place after the game as a celebration.
Springfield High School certainly embraces this tradition year after year. This year’s theme is Out of this World and Student Council president Ruth Becker, a senior, notes her excitement and shares, “Sophomore year was definitely my favorite because my sister was there and I got to dance with her which was so fun.”
Standard plans amongst students include getting ready, then taking pictures and eating dinner before going to the dance with a group. Despite a drama-filled homecoming last year, Evan Carrell, a junior, plans on returning. He remarks “I get a little nervous talking to girls,” so he will be going with friends this time.
This dance is brand new for the class of 2027. Maria DeJong, a freshman, speaks on this. “I am excited but kind of nervous because I am not sure what to do for photos.” She also reveals the dress she is wearing is metallic and blue.
Bridget Lyons, a sophomore, and Jacob Jenkins, a junior, plan on going in the same group. Lyons says she is “so pumped up to go to Homecoming again,” and Jenkins states “I am so excited! It is going to be so much fun.”
Excitement seems to be common amongst SHS students. As Spirit Week comes to an end and the day of the dance begins, take some space out of your day to have an out of this world experience!
