As the end of the year nears, the 2024-2025 Student Council comes to a close. One thing is for sure: this year’s council has stayed busy to benefit our Springfield High School community! First, the council tackled the elaborate task of planning the Homecoming dance. After months of planning a “Night in the National Parks,” the dance turned out tree-mendous! In December, the council organized “The Twelve Days of Senators” to spread some holiday cheer before finals. The hot cocoa bar was a fan favorite among students! Council, then, got right into preparing for City Tournament. With planning everything from t-shirt designs to student section cheers, the council was dedicated to making the four-day event a huge success. Their hard work came to fruition as the council and entire Senators section brought home another Spirit Award win! If you thought the council’s year slowed down after that, you thought wrong! In March, the council hosted the annual Spring Fling dance for students with special needs. The night was filled with dancing and fun and new friends were made. Most recently, the council prepared for their final event of the year: the Senior Citizen Dinner! The Senior Citizen Dinner, while being the last event of the year, might seem easy. However, the night takes an abundance of consideration and preparation. The council is organized into five committees, each one dedicating its time to its required tasks. The decorations group was responsible for bringing the event to life! The theme for this year’s dinner was “Mystery.” The decorations committee did not disappoint with giant magnifying glasses and mysterious feathers as the centerpieces. The commons was turned into a crime scene with caution tape covering every table and column. Going hand-and-hand with decorations, the publicity committee worked hard creating the mystery invites and posters for the community. Without publicity, the night would not be possible! The food committee was in charge of arranging the delicious feast for dinner. Seniors may be a little picky so this could be a challenge, but the meal was a success with rigatoni, green beans and salad. The entertainment committee determines the “fun” aspect of the dinner. From live music to a big game of Clue, the attendees were certainly entertained! The prizes for the Clue game and raffle entailed the donations collected by the donations committee. This committee worked hard to send out members to collect donations from local Springfield businesses, most of whom supported the Senators’ goal of providing a great night for our senior citizens.
The Senior Citizen Dinner is bittersweet for the council’s graduating seniors. The closing of this event marks the end of their journey on council. Simon Lanter, four year council member, reflects on the closing of this chapter: “Thinking about my last Senior Citizen Dinner leaves me feeling bittersweet; it’s sad to think about not being able to be a part of that event again, but I rest easy knowing that the younger council members that myself and others have helped mature into young leaders will confidently continue the event, bringing joy to the seniors in the community for years to come.”
While the night signified a successful ending to the 2024-2025 Student Council, it also gave light to a new beginning. After the Senior Citizen Dinner concluded, council members were quick to clean up in preparation for the 2025-2026 Student Council President Elections. The future of council is looking bright with Charlie Holzmacher serving as the next Student Council President.
