February, the second month of the year, has so much history and things to come…so let’s get into it!
Background
February comes from the Latin word “februa” meaning “to cleanse.” It was named after Februalia, a Roman month-long purification festival.
February is the only month to have less than 30 days! Normally, February has 28 days, but every four years is a Leap Year, where February gets an extra day!
Holidays!
Feb. 2 is Groundhog day, when Punxsutany Phil sees or doesn’t see his shadow, determining how much longer winter will last.
Feb. 10 is the Lunar New Year, associated with Chinese Zodiacs and the first new moon after the winter solstice.
Feb. 11 is the Super Bowl! This year, the Kansas City Chiefs face off against the San Francisco 49ers.
Mardi Gras, or Fat Tuesday, is Feb. 13. This is the final feasting day before Ash Wednesday, Feb. 14, the start of the Christian holiday, Lent.
Lastly, the most popular holiday of February, Valentine’s Day! Valentine’s Day is Feb. 14. The origins of Valentine’s Day took place in Roman, celebrating a fertility festival. It is named after Saint Valentine, the patron saint of beekeepers, engaged couples, happy marriages, love, lovers, and young people.

February is African-American History Month. Many institutions pay tribute to all those who struggled.
What’s Happening at SHS?
Carnations for Valentine’s are being sold until Feb. 13, or until they are sold out. It is $2 per carnation. They will be delivered on Valentine’s Day during the 2nd and 5th hours.
Sadie’s is Feb. 17! So ladies, better get to asking that special someone!
