The first book in the Harry Potter series was published June 26, 1997 nearly 30 years ago. Since then, six more books have been published and eight movies have been released, the last of which was initially aired July 15, 2011. Recently, a new Harry Potter series has been announced and it has fans asking one key question: do we really want another Harry Potter adaptation? On average, after receiving a new piece of Harry Potter once every two years for the past three decades, do we really need another eight-part series that will extend the life of Harry Potter into its forties?

Reasons we want it:

  • It’s been a while. While some might not consider this a good reason for a new production, the truth is that it has been around 15 years since fans have seen Harry Potter in the dim lights of the theater. For the most loyal of fans, this has been an eternity.
  • New content. With the new adaptation of the series is the promise of new content; scenes from Harry in his muggle school, and likely adventures untold from within Hogwarts. Considering the movies never did more than visualize the books, this is an interesting opportunity for exploration.
  • Modernization. For some this is a hot take. Modern does not always mean better, but undoubtedly technology has improved. While there is no guarantee, the effects captured in the magical world of Harry Potter have the potential to be that much better this time around.

Reasons we do not want it:

  • Legacy. For many, Harry Potter was left where it needed to be. The stories were told and the movies captured their essence in a new lighting. After producing all this legendary content, why continue? Beyond the question of what more could be done for the series, when will be enough?
  • Originality. While the trailer and official announcement from the Warner Brothers claims there will be new scenes in this adaptation, will there really be new content? The seasons thus far have all been labeled the same as the books, and beyond giving more background to Harry, nothing more has been promised. As far as viewers can tell, this new series will show little more than the movies.
  • Controversy. After her many posts on X, J.K. Rowling continues to face backlash and opposition to her work. Some fans have gone as far as to boycott the entirety of her books, and destroy preexisting copies of novels. Considering she has openly made many controversial comments about gender identity and the validity of transgendered people’s right to their bodies, some feel inclined not to support the works of Rowling.
  • Intention. With the lack of original perspective, or the promise of largely new content, the announcement of this new series has left many fans wondering about the intention behind the creation of this show. While all movies attempt to make money, there is something to be said about what generates this revenue. Have the producers really attempted to make something new? Or has the legacy of Harry Potter been used to pump out a television show only worth its weight in gold?

Harry Potter is an amazing series that has captivated the last two generations of children, as well as the adults preceding them. Accordingly, fans love Harry Potter and would latch on to just about anything stoking the fire of its legacy, but is this truly a desire? Do people really want another adaptation? Or is this series just a money grab; something Harry Potter lovers will take, just because it’s Harry Potter.
